March 14 – Meeting the Karen People

Waking up bright and early to the beautiful Thailand sunrise and cold fresh breeze was just the start to our amazing 5th day of this journey. We had breakfast at 7:30 which consisted of toast and banana pancakes, which are delicious! After breakfast we have some free time where we get ready for a day of hiking through the wilderness in search of the beautiful elephants. We set off at 9:00 am in the blazing hot heat to find Mai Yui, Mai Bou, Mai Bonchange, and Zuki (the elephants). They were found eating, as usual, we stayed with them for a bit and then hiked back. In the afternoon, we ventured off to the Karen people village to meet at the church to see and play with the children of the village. When we got there the children were at first afraid and a little shy, but after a couple of minutes the boys were chasing around 3 little boys playing tag and the girls were putting flowers in our hair. After the heart break of having to say goodbye to these sweet children we went back for dinner around 6:30. It was very delicious and a lot of food! We were very tired after this long day so we went to bed at around 9 pm, after stories and reflections of the day as a group.
